Her Story

About Tanja

I've been with AT&T for almost 29 years in human resources. My journey into HR started in high school when I participated in a co-op program that allowed me to work in an HR department while finishing my senior year. I really fell in love with being a people-impactful person, being able to help employees solve issues they have and help leadership solve issues from a business perspective. I had mentors at that company who strengthened my interest in human resources. This experience helped me choose my career path before going to college, so I didn't just get a business degree without direction. I knew I was a people person who likes to interact, and I knew I didn't want to do finance or accounting. I went to college and got a degree in management with emphasis in management. Now as an HR business partner, I do a lot of strategic work. I don't do any staffing, determinations, benefits, or payroll. What I do is support various client groups and help with organizational design, leadership development, and skills development. I help with headcount forecasting and other strategic initiatives where they bring me to the table when they have a business issue. I feel very fortunate to do something where it's an impact to the business and not just a siloed function in HR. I have a wonderful team around me with people who have been here a long time, which is good for historical perspective, and newly hired employees who bring a completely different perspective that challenges different ways of doing things. I love the company, I love what I do, I love my clients, and I love the people I work with.

Ten minutes with Tanja

01What do you attribute your success to?

I was first introduced to the field of Human Resources during high school through a cooperative education experience that allowed me to attend school part of the day and work in the HR department of a large organization in the afternoons. This early exposure provided a strong foundation in HR and confirmed my decision to pursue formal education and a long-term career in the field. I attribute my success to a strong work ethic, a continuous desire to learn, and a results-oriented mindset. Throughout my career, I have been afforded opportunities to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, solve complex problems, and support the business in achieving its objectives. I am known for my authenticity and transparency, qualities that have positively influenced both my professional effectiveness and personal growth.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The most valuable career advice I have received is the importance of building strong relationships with clients and colleagues. Establishing a solid foundation of trust early on enables more effective collaboration and partnership. When mutual trust exists, teams are better positioned to achieve meaningful and impactful results. Investing time in relationship-building at the outset consistently yields long-term benefits.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The best advice I would offer to a young woman entering this industry is to actively engage, continuously learn, ask thoughtful questions, and ensure she has a seat at the table. In my role as an HR Business Partner, it is essential to have a deep understanding of the client’s business and to invest the time needed to become truly embedded in it. When you demonstrate this level of involvement and insight, clients begin to view you as a strategically trusted advisor rather than a purely tactical resource. Developing a strong understanding of business challenges and partnering closely on solutions creates meaningful impact within HR and supports both professional growth and organizational success

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The most significant challenge in my field today is upskilling our existing workforce while also attracting and retaining new talent. Although this has long been a priority for organizations, the rapid introduction of AI and other emerging technologies has significantly increased the complexity and urgency of this effort.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My core values are rooted in maintaining a healthy work–life balance. One of my greatest personal accomplishments is building a life with my husband and raising two exceptional sons. I have always remained mindful of why I work and make a conscious effort to disconnect and be fully present when I am at home. Being available for my children while maintaining a strong work ethic has been central to how I approached both family and career. As a result, my sons have developed a strong sense of drive, responsibility, and commitment in their own careers. When I reflect on what true wealth means to me, it is not defined by financial measures, but by the people I am surrounded by. My husband and sons are my greatest source of fulfillment and make me feel truly rich.
