Ten minutes with Tanya
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my commitment to continuous learning, personal growth, and a strong work ethic. I am always striving to improve, embrace new challenges, and expand my knowledge, which is why I am currently pursuing my doctorate.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to stay committed to continuous learning. In education, policies, practices, and methodologies are always evolving, so it’s important to stay updated through trainings, in-services, and conferences to continue growing professionally.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Get to know veteran teachers who are experienced because you learn a lot from those people. Make sure that they ask to go to trainings and especially ask for support if they're confused or lost or need extra guidance. Seek out support from colleagues and higher-ups.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There's pushback from higher ups in the school because special ed numbers keep growing. Campus worried about the numbers of kids getting in the program. I have to find a way to follow the laws and get kids proper support early on despite concerns about numbers or not having enough special ed teachers.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty is a big one. Helpfulness like service to others is really important both work-wise and in the community. Having integrity in anything that you do and doing things to the best of your ability.
