About Tara
Tara Baker serves as a Lead Tech in sterile processing at Steris ORC in Salisbury, North Carolina. With six years of experience in the field, she began her career in healthcare in December 2020 at St. Luke's hospital in Pennsylvania after completing an online class during the COVID-19 pandemic and relocating from New Jersey. Prior to this transition, she worked as an office manager for NJPAC, a nonprofit organization that provides arts exposure to children in inner-city communities. Tara holds a high school diploma, attended Essex County College for one year, and completed trade school at Drake College of Medical Business. She earned her CBDSP certification in July 2021 after passing her boards, which led to increased responsibilities including floating across campuses before advancing to her current lead role. Tara is passionate about her work in SPD, describing it as the heart of the hospital, and she advises young women entering the field to treat every tray as if it were for a loved one. She attributes her professional success to her faith and hope, values balance between work and personal life, and encourages others never to give up, particularly during challenging times. Tara has also noted the need for improved collaboration and understanding between operating room and sterile processing departments.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Tara
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my faith. Faith and hope are key, and you can't have one without the other. During tough times like COVID, faith helped me forge ahead and do what I had to do.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is never give up. Never, ever give up. It's true, and looking back at how I forged ahead during COVID, it's amazing.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell young women entering sterile processing to be passionate about the profession. SPD is the heart of the hospital - without it there are no surgeries. Treat every tray as if your loved one was on that table and needed it to be immaculate.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is getting the OR and SPD to be on the same accord. There's a need for a blueprint or manual to bridge the gap so each department understands the other's processes and importance.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Balance is key. All work and no play makes a dull person. You have to balance work and personal life, be happy, and find your passion and purpose in life to be where you are supposed to be.
