Her Story
About Tara
When you're dressing someone, it's not just about the clothes, it's their content. Sometimes you become a stylist, a personal stylist, a consultant, a counselor, a color analyst. I have to figure out what colors look good on your skin. I have to talk you through, hey, this looks great on you. I have to look at your body, measure your body, and figure out what type of body type you have so we can dress that body. A typical day is usually all of those hats, depending on what's going on. Just waking up, making sure I have everybody's things planned for the day, and what meetings I may have that day, as far as looking at their schedule - hey, I've added something to my schedule, can you take a look at it, and I need to make sure that what they're wearing that day fits into their attire as well. I think a lot of people don't realize that when you're dressing someone, it's not just the clothes or the fashion trends. You're really dealing with someone's mentality as well, and how they feel about their body, and that can become very personal. I work through Hue and Stripe, which they host the app, and I take pictures of the items in your closet. That way, I'll just dress you on what you have, and unless you buy something, there's links to where I can find items for you as well. I create looks from the items that are already in your closet, as well as we can create new looks and new finds for you through that app. I'll set it up to where you'll see all of your looks for that week, the first week of March, the second week of March. I've had that for 2 years since I started, because I knew it was going to be beneficial to dressing people outside of my state and being able to be international in that way.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think the key is to realize you will be wearing multiple hats, and it's not always just about the fashion trends. You also have to make your clients comfortable, because a lot of people have certain feelings about their body. And you have to be aware of that, and you have to console that person inside of them that has that insecurity about themselves. It is real customer service. It is real consoling and counseling a person through whatever insecurities they have with their bodies, and sometimes you have to dress up that insecurity. I think those are just the things to know about being a personal stylist and image consultant.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think that the biggest challenge is being the best kept secret. You know, you have the skills, you know what you're doing, you're doing it, but these days, you have to record everything. You gotta record for display and you gotta post, and you gotta make videos. And I think that that is the challenge. I think that's the challenge for everybody in any industry. Even if your hair stylist and you're great at what you do, but you gotta make content. You got to record it, you have to show people, hey, this is what I do. You have to promote your company. You have to promote it 24-7. I think that's just a challenge in general in business, is being great at what you do, but also you have to record it. You gotta show it. You gotta make these videos, you have to go, you have to become a content creator. And I think that that's the biggest challenge in general, honestly.
