About Tarrah

Tarrah Kinney is an accomplished higher education leader and advocate for neurodiversity who serves as the Director of the Neill-Wint Center for Neurodiversity at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. With approximately a decade of experience spanning special education, autism education, curriculum development, teacher preparation, and higher education leadership, she is committed to creating inclusive environments where every learner has the opportunity to thrive. Her career reflects a deep passion for breaking barriers, advancing accessibility, and empowering individuals through education.

Kinney earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Oklahoma Health Campus before completing a Master's Degree in Special Education in 2022. She further strengthened her expertise by becoming a Certified Autism Specialist (CAS) in 2025 while continuing her professional development through specialized certifications in higher education and open educational resources. Throughout her career, she has progressed from classroom educator and special education professional to university leadership, overseeing initiatives focused on neurodiversity, faculty support, curriculum innovation, and inclusive educational practices. In recognition of her leadership and contributions, she was named to the NextGen Under 30 of Oklahoma Class of 2024.

Guided by visionary leadership, compassion, and authenticity, Kinney believes meaningful change begins with the willingness to challenge limitations and continuously seek better solutions. She encourages future educators and leaders to remain flexible, work diligently, embrace lifelong learning, and stay true to themselves despite the evolving nature of education. Outside of her professional responsibilities, she enjoys traveling, spending time outdoors, and supporting community initiatives that promote inclusion, women's athletics, and opportunities for individuals with autism and other forms of neurodiversity. Her mission continues to center on building communities where differences are recognized as strengths and every individual has the opportunity to succeed.

Ten minutes with Tarrah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being a visionary leader who looks beyond immediate challenges and proactively seeks solutions before problems fully emerge. I strive to lead with compassion, extend grace to others, and approach every day with purpose and optimism. Combining strategic thinking with empathy allows me to create meaningful change while supporting those around me.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I have often been told that one person cannot change the world. While I understand that perspective, I have chosen to believe that I should always try. My goal is to give my very best every day, knowing that meaningful change begins with the willingness to make an effort and never stop trying.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Education is constantly evolving, so it's important to remain adaptable, committed, and purpose-driven. Be willing to work hard, even when the work changes from year to year. Stay authentic, remain true to your values, and recognize when you need time to rest and recharge. Taking care of yourself enables you to better serve others and sustain a meaningful career.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest challenges is developing confidence in yourself and your abilities. Believing in your own work and advocating for what you know is right will take you further than almost anything else. Confidence, combined with the courage to stand behind your convictions, creates opportunities for meaningful leadership and lasting impact.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I believe in staying connected—to others and to myself. Taking time for self-care allows me to show up as my best self for those I serve. Authenticity, compassion, meaningful relationships, and personal well-being are essential values that guide both my professional leadership and my personal life.
