About Taryn

Taryn Scott has been working in her current role on the workplace experience team for two years at an office in the World Trade Center in New York City. In this position, she manages day-to-day operations, coordinates events including catering and setup for high-profile meetings, and assists clients with planning events in the office space. Prior to this role, Taryn worked in restaurants where she progressed from server to bartender, host, and key manager, as well as back-end administration roles including website merchandiser for a boutique. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor's of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences, completing the fashion merchandising program within that degree. Taryn identifies storytelling as her main area of expertise today. She has received the Office Sunshine award and was named Outback Employee of the Month. Taryn attributes her success to learning from every interaction she has had, whether positive or challenging. She values fun, care, and comfort above all in her work and personal life, often incorporating these into event planning. Taryn has volunteered with community gardens, reading circles for children, and packing care packages for families in need.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Taryn

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute my success to literally everyone I've interacted with, whether it's like a positive interaction or a challenging interaction. There's always something to learn from. The lesson could either be keep being the same person you are because that's received really well, or this is a challenge for you to be able to change and improve.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. It's a mindfulness tip but also know what you need to focus on, know what your personal goals and your milestones are, and stay focused on that rather than wasting time on being distracted or worrying about someone else.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Do it all. Leave no stone unturned. Find a learning opportunity in everything, even if it's learning how to organize something differently. Anything that you find, just do it all, and then just be prepared to share it and be enthusiastic about it.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Growth is the biggest challenge and opportunity. In this role you can do it all but it's all about knowing when to pivot and knowing when to change, and that will in turn affect your growth.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Fun, care, and comfort. Fun is a true core value of myself and what I bring to my office. Anytime I'm planning an event, I'm always starting with a very simple idea and then I say how can I make it fun. Care is another big core value. Comfort as well.
