About Tawana

Tawana Stewart is a Program Coordinator Assistant based in High Point, North Carolina. In this role for the past five years, she works with at-risk youth in non-profit community programs, partnering with seven schools and the Carl Chavis YMCA to deliver out-of-school programs, after-school activities, tutoring, financial literacy, and job preparation including mock interviews. She assists students with basic needs such as clothing and hygiene items through a pantry and facilitates paid work opportunities through community partnerships like the City of High Point recreation centers. Previously, Stewart spent eleven years as a property manager and worked in banking at Wood Forest Bank, building on her deep community roots. Her approach draws from personal experiences and what she describes as her School of Hard Knocks education, emphasizing street knowledge and community support. She takes pride in seeing program participants graduate, pursue opportunities like military service, and return to mentor others.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You gotta love kids, and you gotta be where they at. On some of them rough pass, so, you know, no judgment.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family is very important. God number one. Walk by faith not by sight.
