Her Story

About Tawanna

With 23 years of experience in state government, I have dedicated my career to human resources and helping employees navigate critical workplace needs. I began my professional journey in administration and personnel, starting as an injury specialist. When I was promoted to wellness specialist, I had to learn the Family and Medical Leave Act process, and in learning how it actually helps employees get what they need, I fell in love with that work. I've always been one who likes to help and assist, and this role gave me the opportunity to truly make a difference for employees. I served as Safety and Wellness Manager from 2017 to 2021, and in 2021, I stepped into my current position as HR Assistant Director. My main area of expertise is the Family and Medical Leave Act, and I also conduct training to help others understand these important processes. I come from a family that doesn't have a lot of professionals, and becoming who I am today is not really what I thought I could have for myself had it not been for my mentors. To come from literally nothing to be able to stand before people and train them, to see myself from where I was to where I am now, it speaks volumes. I want other women to see that you can come from a low place and sit in a high place. That's what's most important to me - showing other young women that they can do this too.

Ten minutes with Tawanna

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my faith and my mentors. I've had a lot of role models and mentors throughout my career, and I listened to them. I did what they said to do and moved how they told me to move. That's why I've made it this far. My mentors really pushed me, and I'm grateful for that guidance. Without them, I wouldn't have thought this kind of professional life was possible for someone like me who came from a family without many professionals.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received was to never settle for where I am, no matter how long I'm there. But always look beyond. This advice meant a lot to me because it pushed me to keep growing and reaching for more, even when I was comfortable in a position. It's about never becoming complacent and always striving for the next level in your career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would give young women the same advice I received: don't settle. Don't settle for where you are, but always reach for the sky. I would also tell them to find mentors and role models, and when you find them, listen to them. Do what they say and move how they tell you to move. I've had a lot of role models and mentors throughout my career, and listening to them and following their guidance is why I've made it this far. Let them push you, because that push is what helps you grow and achieve things you might not have thought possible.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field right now is growth opportunities. Most often, when it comes to human resources, when somebody gets in those positions, they stay there. So the challenge is that there's limited room for advancement because people tend to remain in their HR roles for long periods. The growth comes from finding ways to move forward despite this reality.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are integrity and loyalty. These two values go hand in hand and guide everything I do, both professionally and personally. They form the foundation of how I interact with others and approach my responsibilities.
