Her Interview
Ten minutes with Tearra
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to how far I’ve come and the transformation I’ve been able to witness in both myself and others. Coming from a background with limited resources, I pushed myself to seek more by moving to California and learning from those who had achieved what I aspired to, while also realizing the importance of internal growth. My experiences in highly challenging environments taught me resilience, emotional intelligence, and how to navigate different personalities while staying grounded. Today, I’m driven by helping others go from where they are to where they never thought they could be, while continuing to grow myself through learning and mentorship, maintaining the balance that keeps me focused and successful.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
"Don't just do the job—improve the system." That advice reshaped how I approach leadership and innovation. I believe the greatest value comes from solving problems others overlook, challenging outdated processes, and leaving every organization more efficient than I found it. Titles may change, but the ability to create meaningful impact through strategy, technology, and innovation is what builds a lasting legacy.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't wait for permission to lead. Build your expertise, stay curious, and become known for solving problems that others avoid. Technology will continue to evolve, but critical thinking, integrity, and the ability to innovate will always set you apart. Your voice belongs in every room where decisions are made so show up prepared, lead with confidence, and let your work speak louder than your title.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The greatest opportunity is the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence across government. AI has the potential to transform how agencies operate by reducing administrative burdens, improving decision-making, and allowing public servants to focus on higher-value work. The challenge is ensuring innovation is implemented strategically, ethically, and with the workforce in mind. Organizations that embrace AI responsibly today will define the future of public service tomorrow.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are alignment, purpose, and investment. I'm at a point where I don't want to do any more 9-to-5s just to show up - I want to show up with passion for whatever I do. I've become more selective because I'm kind of done doing things that I'm not passionate about. When it comes to opportunities, whether it's a podcast or speaking engagement, I want to make sure it feels right with my soul and that I'm passionate about it. I don't want to just get on a podcast because it's Tuesday - I want it to be purposeful. And when it comes to where I work in the future, it's all about investment. I want to be with the right company that's going to invest in me and continue to help grow me. I want to make sure that place or entity is pouring into me just as well as I'm going to pour into it, so that way we can achieve a common goal. I also have to be paid my values - I've financially put myself in a position to retire at an earlier age, so I'm open, but I need to be valued properly.
