About Teneka

I had a rough start in life. I lost my mom when I was barely young - she was murdered by my father in rural North Carolina. My younger sister and I were sent to Boston while my older brother stayed in North Carolina. When I was older, I had to come back to North Carolina because my father was murdered and found in the woods. I had my son at an early age and struggled to work full-time because he had needs and struggled in school. I would have to go up to the school all the time, and finding a full-time job was hard because I would take so many days off. That's where I fell in love with temporary work - it gave me more flexibility in my schedule to be able to be a full-time single mom to my son and help him meet his needs. I had my daughter at a young age too, so by the time I was in my twenties, I had my two kids as a single mom, and I still committed to temporary contract work. I watched it change over the years and realized I love this - it helps so many people. I wanted to help people that may have circumstances even greater than mine but are not able to find work or what they really love to do. I started working at a nonprofit that protects doctors and nurses from malpractice lawsuits through education and training. I came in as a front desk agent there, and the opportunity opened up for me to be a junior assistant in HR. That was my first job in the field. I've worked at PwC, Amazon, Cengage, Draper Labs, Compass Groups, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, and some really big names on really great hiring teams. I've staffed over almost every industry and every type of role. My love for talent acquisition grew, and I've always had a passion for giving back to the community. Through Reliable Source, we created the ACTS Award last year - Aspiring Contributors That Serve - where we presented 3 individuals in the Greensboro Triad area with awards for their service and work in the community. We work with individuals to do free resume writing, free interview prep, and we just started an online recruiting course where we're giving 15 seats away free for individuals that can't afford the course. We've gone out and fed the homeless population several times, and we're really just getting started. That is my first love, my passion, and the driving force behind Reliable Source.

01What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

What I do is my brand, and it's not always measured by dollars or the amount of articles or the number of times my name is mentioned in a room when I'm there or not there. I think it should be measured, for me personally, by the people that I've impacted, the lives that I've touched, the hope that I've given, the connections that I've made. That's what's important to me. I'm just true to who I am and what I stand for. It's not really about me - it's more about what I can do for others and how I can help others. I know that I am a natural-born leader, and I do feel that that is my purpose. I want to walk in that purpose where I'm doing more work in the community, where I'm giving back more, where I'm being more influential, not to be noticed, but to really make a difference and to be impactful. I think just letting people know that there's still good, there's still opportunities, there's still positivity here, there's still support, there's still hope.
