Teresa Beckley has built a diverse career spanning the insurance field for seven years and the hair industry for 20 years. After beginning to style hair in high school around 1996 to support her family, she attended Universal Beauty College and Flavio's Beauty College, graduating from cosmetology school in 2008. Beckley gained experience at Spot Hair Studio in San Bernardino under Troy Ballard, where she pursued editorial work including photo shoots and features in Black Sophisticated Hair, Passion Hair Magazine, and Essence. She later worked with photographer Keith Savage and opened her first salon, Hair Geek Studio, in Riverside, California in 2016. At her salon, Beckley approaches hair care scientifically, likening it to plant care, and specializes in restoration, alopecia treatment, and creating wigs for cancer patients. She attributes her success to perseverance and faith, emphasizing authenticity and fulfillment over financial gain when advising others.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I keep finding ways to reinvent myself. I don't know where it comes from, but I find this print I don't, you know, I don't know if I pull it from my toes, but I find the strength, but I believe it's God. I made that push not to give up. Don't be weary of well-doing. It's gonna be okay. Persevere. It's gonna turn over, you know? At the end of the tunnel, just keep going. Just keep going, putting one foot in front of the other. There's a brighter side.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't make it about money. Think about what is fulfilling to you. Make it about you being your original self. And being authentic, and bringing what you have, to the table.
