Her Story

About Terra

Terra Johnson is the owner and permanent makeup artist behind her studio in Summerville, South Carolina, bringing more than a decade of experience in the beauty industry to every client she serves. Beginning her career in cosmetology, she developed a strong foundation in artistry, precision, and personalized client care before advancing into permanent makeup through specialized microblading training. Over the years, she has refined her techniques to focus on natural-looking enhancements, specializing in nano brows, lip blush, and eyeliner. Her philosophy centers on creating balanced, customized results that enhance each client's natural features while fostering trust, comfort, and confidence throughout the entire experience.

While successfully managing her permanent makeup business, Johnson is also completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Herzing University, with an anticipated graduation in August 2026. Her nursing education, combined with clinical training at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), has strengthened her understanding of skin health, healing, infection prevention, and patient safety. By combining artistic expertise with a clinical perspective, she delivers services that emphasize both aesthetic excellence and evidence-based safety. She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, reflecting her commitment to professional growth and excellence in healthcare.

As both an entrepreneur and future registered nurse, Johnson oversees every aspect of her business, from client consultations and treatment planning to marketing and operations. She believes persistence, continuous learning, and authenticity are the keys to long-term success and encourages aspiring professionals to remain dedicated while building meaningful relationships with their communities. Looking ahead, she plans to continue expanding her practice by integrating her nursing background with permanent makeup services, allowing her to provide an even higher level of personalized, safe, and innovative care to every client she serves.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Terra

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my cosmetology background, which gave me a strong foundation in beauty, precision, and client care, along with the encouragement I received to pursue permanent makeup. After completing my microblading certification, I committed to building my own business through hard work, continuous learning, and persistence. Staying dedicated to my craft and continuing to grow has allowed me to build a successful career over the past decade.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't let anything discourage you from pursuing your goals. Stay committed, even when progress feels slow, because success doesn't happen overnight. Build a strong social media presence by consistently sharing quality before-and-after photos and promoting your work to your local community. Continue learning, stay persistent, and trust that your dedication will pay off over time.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges I face is the regulatory structure that requires me to operate within a medical spa under physician supervision, which limits my ability to expand my business and hire additional staff. As a result, I personally manage every aspect of my business, including marketing, scheduling, and client services. An exciting opportunity is that completing my nursing degree will provide greater professional flexibility, allowing me to work under a nurse practitioner or physician assistant and expand the ways I can serve my clients.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I believe in providing honest guidance, personalized care, and a customized experience for every client. I value precision, safety, trust, attention to detail, and genuine human connection. My goal is always to create natural, balanced results while helping each client feel confident, respected, and cared for throughout their experience.
