Her Story

About Terri

I have been in the cardiac device field since 2007. My current role as Certified Cardiac Device Specialist at University of Kansas Health System began in October 2019. I handle in-office device checks ranging from 2 to 57 patients daily, perform remote monitoring, and program pacemakers, defibrillators, and loop recorders. As primary preceptor, I train and onboard new staff. I earned my master's degree in 2017 from Lindenwood University, the first in my family to do so. I passed the CDRMS exam and serve on the Test Writing Committee. I received the University of Kansas Exceptional Performance Award and was a lead innovator during the merger with Olathe Health System.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the leaders I have followed who implemented their skills and knowledge in me. I have learned a lot at the University of Kansas Health System from my peers and coworkers. It is important to make the best of every moment and lead by example.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to just keep striving to be better each and every day, keep up with things going on in the industry, lead by example, and take that with you wherever you go.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say to continue to keep up on your education, you can't ever be too over-educated. Keep striving to be successful in your role, utilize your resources, keep moving forward, and when you fail, view it as a process improvement technique. Pick yourself up and keep going.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is making sure we optimize the devices as best as possible for each patient since every patient is different and the industry is forever changing. We must keep up with new devices and advisories to inform patients and improve their quality of life.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is important. Stay grounded and humble but maintain confidence. Be a team player, which naturally leads to leadership roles. Be your own best cheerleader and support others on the team.
