Her Story
About Tess
I've been working in marketing for about four and a half years after making a career switch from education and childcare around COVID. I work on the account side, where my main goal is to build and move through client relationships. This also includes managing relationships within the different departments in my office - I serve as the go-between between clients and our creative team, video team, and performance marketing team. I definitely work in a lot of project management too. I honestly just take pride in building strong relationships with my clients. Over the last four and a half years, I've grown to be someone that they can confide in, someone that they can trust, that they know I have their best interests in mind. Keeping those relationships growing and positive is probably one of my favorite things.

Ten minutes with Tess
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would attribute it to probably two things. One would be my dedication and hard work - I want to do well, and I want to represent my company and my clients well. I also had an incredible mentor at my current job. She was my manager when I started, and I feel like she also helped kind of shape who I am, and kind of taught me the ropes of marketing, because I was entry level at the time.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say be yourself. I feel like I have a bubbly, positive personality, and I like to bring that into the workplace, but also, if you feel like you are not being treated right, or if you have opinions, don't be afraid to voice them, obviously, in a nice and respectful way. But, I think definitely just be yourself. I think at the point when I started, I tried to be like my mentor, and I realized some things just didn't work for me, and so I kind of learned along the way that I could use what she taught me, but kind of mold it into myself.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think that the biggest opportunities is that the digital marketing space is always changing and evolving, and it's kind of exciting because there's always something new that is popping up. At one point, years ago, it was kind of like Facebook advertising, and then Instagram, and now kind of TikTok is taking hold, and I feel like things are always evolving with the consumer, or the market, or the industry, and that is a very exciting opportunity to kind of be involved in things from the start.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I definitely value honesty. I value high morals, I feel like I want kind of people - I mean, I guess that goes with honesty. I don't know if communication is a value, but I definitely value a high level of communication, whether that's telling me that these are areas that I can improve, or giving positive feedback. I feel like I like the conversation to be flowing, communication to be flowing. And then I feel like I also value just human rights, but that's probably a more personal value.
