Her Story

About Tia

Tia Deloatch has spent about 8 years in the field of education, including five years as a school counselor at a charter school located on a military base. Motivated by the guidance she received from her high school counselor following a family tragedy, she chose to pursue counseling rather than teaching to support students in similar situations. She holds a master's degree and is currently working toward a doctorate in psychology, with goals of becoming a district-wide counselor and teaching Psych 101 at the college level. Tia collaborates frequently with the military base community and has organized events such as a school carnival involving local members. She also volunteers weekly at her church, serving middle school students on Sundays. Tia attributes her success to taking each day one at a time while maintaining a positive outlook, crediting her grandmother as a key supporter who encouraged her to pursue education and build her own career identity.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Tia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to taking it one day at a time and always looking at the positive side of things. I tell my students that it's important to ask if it's a bad five minutes or a bad day, because even in hard moments I know it's going to get better and it's not the end of the world. My grandmother has also been one of my biggest supporters, pushing me to go to school and have my own career and identity.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would advise setting boundaries early so that people take you seriously. You can still have your personality and be playful, but know there's a time to play and a time not to, as my mom always said. Setting those boundaries of when to be professional and not.
