What do you attribute your success to?
I would say faith and consistency have been the keys to my success over the last 22 years in the insurance industry. My faith has guided me through every step of my career, and staying consistent in my work and my values has allowed me to grow from a customer service representative to managing customer service for two offices. I believe that having faith in what you're doing and being consistent in your efforts, even when things get challenging, is what makes the difference between just working and truly succeeding.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I've ever been given is that I don't know the key to success, but I know the key to failure is trying to please everybody. You can't please everybody, but you can do the best at what you can do. You know, be the best at what you can do. This advice has really shaped how I approach my work and my leadership. Instead of spreading myself thin trying to make everyone happy, I focus on being excellent at what I do and staying true to my values. That's what has allowed me to succeed in this industry for over two decades.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You have to be strong and courageous in this field. When you start to think of insurance, people kind of think of insurance as a man's space. But if you put your mind to it, put your feet to it, and have faith that you can make it happen, just keep pushing. I would also say that finding your way and making a decision on which path you want to take is important, because when you get into the insurance industry, there are so many different routes you can take, from underwriting to customer service and beyond. Make a decision, and if it doesn't work, quickly find your no in that place, but then find your correct place in the space. It's one of those things where it's like I love it or I hate it. Once you're in it, you'll know if it's for you, and then you'll have an idea of which road to go down, whether you want to do management or your own agency. Just find your footing once you get in the door and pick a path.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I would say before, there used to be a lot of challenges for women in insurance, but now, not so much. The biggest challenge I see is kind of finding your way and making a decision on which way you want to go. When you get into the insurance industry, there are so many different routes that you can take, from underwriting to customer service and everything in between. The key is to make a decision, and if it doesn't work, quickly say no to that path, but then find your correct place in the space. I feel like in insurance, it's one of those things where it's either I love it or I hate it. Once you're in it, you'll know if it's for you, and then you'll also have an idea of which direction to take, whether you want to do management or have your own agency. It's really about finding your footing once you get in the door and picking a path that works for you.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is at the top of the list for me. I would say honesty and integrity are absolutely essential, both professionally and personally. I also value being a hard worker. Work ethic is one of the values that I value in people the most. These principles guide everything I do, whether I'm managing customer service teams, serving as a pastor, or working as a life coach. Staying true to these values has been the foundation of my success and the way I build relationships with customers, team members, and the people I serve in my community.
