Her Interview
Ten minutes with Tianne
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to dogged determination and making a conscious decision about where I want to contribute and build. At this stage of my life, I have worked hard and refused to simply sit on the sidelines. I believe in developing simple solutions that can be implemented more simply and efficiently. I also believe our differences create opportunities for collaboration, and that collaboration can lead to stronger outcomes.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received came from my mentor, Joe Halisky, through SCORE. He taught me that if someone does not want to do business with me because I am a woman or Black, I have the same opportunity to tell them no. That advice reinforced the importance of being true to myself and doing the work rather than changing who I am to pursue an opportunity. I also learned not to chase money at the expense of my identity or values.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women to embrace being women and everything that comes with that. Our empathy can give us a valuable perspective and vision. I would also encourage them to understand that failure is a natural part of innovation and growth. We may fail at many of the things we attempt, but those failures provide opportunities to learn. Instead of avoiding failure, embrace it, learn from it, and continue moving forward.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in AI consulting is getting beyond the hype. There is a tremendous amount of information and enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence, while organizations are still looking for credible answers about how to apply it responsibly and effectively. As a solopreneur, another challenge is spending significant amounts of time alone developing ideas and solutions. At the same time, this creates an opportunity to establish credibility in an emerging field and help organizations navigate AI with greater clarity and purpose.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, integrity, character, loyalty, and transparency are important to me. I believe in telling the truth and being willing to hear the truth. Loyalty begins with being loyal to yourself and keeping the commitments you make to yourself. I also believe in being transparent, understanding who I am dealing with, and making sure that the people and organizations I work with are aligned with my values and approach.
