About Tierra
Tierra Copeland is an accomplished events professional serving as Director of University Events at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia. With more than eleven years of experience in the events industry, particularly within higher education, she specializes in creating and executing engaging, mission-driven events that bring together students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and external partners. In her current role, she oversees university and third-party events, manages event operations and budgets, coordinates vendors and stakeholders, and supervises event staff and student workers.
Before joining Oglethorpe University, Tierra served as Events and Student Support Manager at Emory University School of Law, where she planned and managed orientations, visiting days, recognition ceremonies, meetings, and special events. Her earlier experience includes serving as Events Manager at the International Living Future Institute, Meetings Manager at the American Cancer Society, and progressing through several event and professional development roles at BOMA Georgia. Across these positions, she developed expertise in event logistics, contract negotiation, budgeting, speaker coordination, registration, sponsorships, professional development programs, and post-event analysis.
Tierra holds a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from Hampton University, with a minor in Marketing, and has earned an Event Planning Certificate through Emory University Continuing Education. Her professional accomplishments include receiving the MPI Georgia Shining Star Award for outstanding volunteer service. Beyond her professional responsibilities, Tierra demonstrates a strong commitment to creating meaningful experiences and strengthening communities through events. Her work reflects her belief that events are about more than logistics—they are opportunities to celebrate people, create connections, honor milestones, and make a lasting difference.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I would contribute my success to my mother and also being the oldest child so having other people to my siblings looking up to me and even my cousins seeing how I navigate my career and being the first one to actually step out and move to a new city and figuring it out and navigating which direction I want my career to go into.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Networking and having peers that you can branch out to and definitely reach out to if you have any questions. Definitely always continue always learning so attending workshops and seminars and meetings and conferences. Not being afraid to ask for help when you are unsure about certain things. And then also trying to learn how to balance work in your personal life as well.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Definitely research network basically be able to go the extra mile. Find something that brings you joy and you're dedicated to the purpose the mission because even on the rough days you still have something to look forward to. Definitely get some mentors that you can trust and appreciate.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges during COVID-19 pandemic when unsure where events industry would go. Opportunities in higher ed events to connect with peers from different universities and in Atlanta events industry is small so networking at events.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Having a good strong work ethic so very dedicated very passionate about what I do and how I enhance our events and bring them to life. Definitely value transparency so being transparent and then integrity as well.
