What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to sharing my story, because I realized that holding in my experience of suicide loss wasn’t helping anyone, and that by opening up, I could help others find their way out of darkness.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
When I started writing my book and breaking the silence on my story that I'd lived in for decades about suicide loss, I received advice that really changed everything for me. The advice was that keeping your story in isn't helping anyone. Your story is about you, but it's not for you - it's for others, to help them out of the darkness. That wisdom gave me the courage to share what I had kept silent for so long, and it's become the foundation of my work as an author and speaker.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Follow your heart, go with your gut, follow your passion, because it will be the thing that gives you and makes you happy every day. If you are in a career that does not make you happy and you are unfulfilled, it will weigh on you. So do what fulfills you the most, even if it doesn't make the most money. That fulfillment is what matters.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
With the author and speaking field, the biggest challenge is probably visibility. Just getting visibility. There's so much noise out there right now, so getting the visibility is really the main challenge I face.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, authenticity, being your authentic self, and integrity are the values that matter most to me in both my work and personal life.
