Clearwater, FL 33758

Tina Miller is the Founder and Executive Director of Florida Recovery Schools of Tampa Bay, where she opened three private recovery high schools serving teenagers aged 14–19 who are navigating recovery from co-occurring disorders. A survivor of childhood trauma, rape, domestic violence, and addiction, Tina turned her personal challenges into a mission to help others, creating sober schools that provide education, mental health services, and recovery support at no cost to families. Her innovative programs incorporate neurofeedback, biofeedback, and epigenetics to teach students that their struggles are neurological, not moral failings, helping them build new pathways to recovery and resilience. With over 28 years of experience spanning social work, education, and juvenile justice, Tina has led state programs, written over 100 grants, and developed leadership initiatives that prioritize healing, empowerment, and student success. She also serves as an international speaker, author of five books, and Christian comedian, using her story to inspire and educate audiences about trauma, recovery, and purpose-driven living. Tina’s approach blends professional expertise with lived experience, emphasizing connection, hope, and restoration for young people and the communities that support them. Her work has earned widespread recognition, including the Distinguished Citizen Award, the Senator Roussan Torchbearer Award, and a feature on The Kelly Clarkson Show, which brought additional support and opportunities to expand her school model. Tina is also actively involved in professional associations such as the National Association of Recovery Schools and the Tampa Bay Chamber, advocating for teens in recovery and serving as a mentor and role model. Through her schools, speaking, and ministry, she continues to transform the lives of young people, demonstrating that with faith, support, and evidence-based interventions, lasting change is possible.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the entire journey that life has taken me and how God has guided my life, and I am now living my purpose. I am a childhood survivor of rape, trauma, domestic violence, and struggled with ADHD and had to have speech therapy from the Kindergarten to the 6th grade. I struggled with addiction and got sober at the age of 23. I continued to grow and finished school and even went on to get my college degree, and there I found my calling in social work. Now I am an international speaker, writer, and have successfully opened 3 private schools so that I can help children just like me to overcome the trauma. I am also an author of 5 books, speaker, and Christian comedian, and I owe it all to my Lord and Savior. Everything happens for a reason, and the miraculous part of it all is just trusting God that, okay, I'm going through this challenge or this struggle, but it's for Him and it's to help His people. I use my story for His glory.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

You can and you will have a successful career helping others to heal and grow. I had one professor that asked me what my major was after I gave a presentation about kids dealing with the murder of their best friends when they were little, because at 7, my best friend was kidnapped and murdered. I told her my major was interior design, and she said, oh, honey, you need to work with children. I was like, I don't like children! But she told me, you need to, because you can transform that pain into purpose. That's when I went into social work, and I've worked over 28 years in social work, education, and juvenile justice. I started out in social work, education and juvenile justice, and I have received the Distinguished Citizen Award, Senator Roussan Award, and was a guest speaker on the Kelly Clarkson show in 2024.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You can have a career in helping others as well. Use your talents and abilities to help those who need you the most. It's so important that we use that purpose to help others, and that's what I do every day. Sometimes we're just planting the seed. We just have to plant that seed of hope, and we may never see it flourish, and that's okay. Our job as foster parents is temporary, just plant that seed of hope in that child.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Being in nonprofit and seeing my private schools grow as I am hoping to expand to Ohio, California, and New York. After appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show, what it did was open other states up and other places in Florida that want a Victory High School. I have 3 counties in Ohio that want Victory High Schools, and then 5 other counties here in Florida, and then California, New York, and all these other states that came forward. I'll definitely open it. I mean, I'll walk through the doors if the funding's there, and, you know, Lord knows there's enough kids that need it.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Helping to save the children that need me the most, as I use my story for the Glory of God to help those who have been mistreated to heal and live out their purpose. I would say my most notable achievement is saving the lives of these children. They come to us feeling so broken and literally on death's doorstep, and we bring them back to life, and give them joy again, and just love them back to life. That is priceless, so much more than any award or any certificate or any licensure. Seeing the joy back in my students' faces, and for them to have life again, it's just unbelievable. In my spare time, I love to be on the water. That's why I live in Florida, in Clearwater. I love the water, I watch the sunrise every morning over the Tampa Bay, and then I try to watch the sunset at the beach. I love anything to do with water, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, just laying and listening to the ocean. That's my way of recharging. Sunshine is good for the soul.
