Her Interview
Ten minutes with Tomeka
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success is deeply rooted in the resilience and dedication of my family. With a father who drove trucks, a mother who cared for patients as a CNA, and an aunt who thrived in administrative work, I was surrounded by powerful examples of hard work, empathy, and service. I took those early lessons and applied them directly to my career in healthcare customer service. That combination of inherited perseverance and a fierce personal drive to learn is what allows me to maintain exceptional quality standards—such as my 100% grievance accuracy and high customer satisfaction scores—even in a complex, highly regulated environment. Ultimately, it’s this foundation that drives me to be a reliable Subject Matter Expert for my peers and a compassionate advocate for the members I serve.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is to embrace lifelong learning, especially in a field as dynamic as healthcare. Because Pharmacy Benefits Management (PBM) and Medicare Part D guidelines are constantly evolving, staying curious and seeking new knowledge is essential. This mindset has not only allowed me to adapt to rapid industry changes, but it has also empowered me to achieve exceptional quality standards and accuracy in highly regulated processes. I truly believe that a commitment to continuous learning is the key to long-term success, resilience, and personal growth.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the healthcare industry is to strive for excellence and stay deeply committed to continuous learning. Throughout your career, you will inevitably encounter diverse personalities and complex team dynamics. My strongest advice is to focus on your craft and your professional goals, rather than getting distracted by interpersonal conflicts or the work environment itself.
This is where developing a High EQ (Emotional Quotient, or Emotional Intelligence) becomes your greatest asset. High EQ is built on four pillars: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. In practice, this means having the emotional maturity to understand your own triggers, navigate differing personalities with grace, and not take other people's negative behaviors personally. By leaning into your emotional intelligence, you can keep your energy strictly aligned with your own success and objectives. Protect your focus, master the details of your role, and use your expertise to become a reliable, compassionate advocate for the members you serve.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is navigating the rapid evolution of systems, processes, and highly regulated compliance standards within Pharmacy Benefits Management (PBM). The landscape is constantly shifting, especially with new CMS regulations and changes to Medicare Part D. It can be challenging to adapt to these complex work instructions quickly while continuing to provide flawless support and first-call resolution. However, these changes present incredible opportunities to strengthen my adaptability and serve as a resource for my peers. As a Subject Matter Expert, I view every shift in policy or system update as a chance to continue learning, master new workflows, and ultimately ensure our members receive the accurate, compassionate pharmacy benefits education they rely on.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are clear communication, active listening, empathy, and emotional intelligence. In the highly complex healthcare space, taking the time to truly listen and understand others is essential for building trust and resolving issues. I believe that approaching every interaction—whether with a Medicare member, a provider, or a colleague—with compassion and respect fosters collaboration and creates a much more positive environment. Ultimately, leaning on these core values allows me to navigate challenges effectively and contribute meaningfully as both a Subject Matter Expert and an advocate for those I serve.
