What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a clear understanding of my purpose, a strong support system, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Staying focused on why I do what I do has guided my decisions, while the influence of my supporters and my faith has kept me encouraged. Continuously learning and growing has allowed me to adapt and excel in every stage of my career.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is "Do it anyway!" When the task seems to be too challenging..."Do it anyway!" When you are unsure of the outcome.."Do it anyway!" Yes, one will have to consider all the options, plan, then execute the best strategies to achieve the goal... However, a leader cannot let fear, self- doubt, or the negative attitude of others block progress or your purpose... Pray on it...Think on It... Plan for it...Prepare for it..."Do it anyway!"
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to embrace vulnerability when working with children—it’s okay to show it, especially with students. Being open helps create a safe and trusting environment where they feel supported and understood. Authenticity is a powerful tool in building meaningful connections and making a positive impact on all learners.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
As a Black woman in Educational Leadership, serving a predominantly white community, I cannot speak on the opportunities without addressing the challenges as well. Taking on this role allowed me the platform to continue to drive significant change by leveraging the benefits of diversity, sharing cultural experiences, offering perspective, and improving systems even while navigating persistent systemic challenges. As many of us know, there’s plenty of research to support how diverse leadership can improve outcomes for all students and foster a more inclusive culture. However, systemic barriers, microaggressions, and sexism can take a toll on mental health. It is imperative to have effective self-care strategies and a safe support system for sustainability and career longevity.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in both work and life include staying grounded and connected to life, whether it’s through quality time with family and friends, traveling, spending time at the beach, or with nature in general. I also value continuous growth, which I pursue through reading self-improvement/enlightenment and biography books. Creativity plays a big role in my life as well, especially through writing, as it helps me express myself and stay inspired.
