About Tomiko
I've worked in education administration for 23 years, starting back in April of 2002. I began in proprietary post-secondary education for-profit with Remington College, when they were actually Southeast College of Technology. Throughout the years, I've matriculated through various institutions including Vatterott College, then moved into secondary education where I worked with Goodwill as one of the founding members for their Excel Center in Memphis, which is their high school for adults. I then transitioned to help open the Little Rock location. I had a short stint as a principal for Premier High School, another charter school, but I still consulted with Shorter part-time, serving in the role of Registrar. I've been with Shorter College since October 2021, and became the Associate Dean in August of last year. Ironically, I fell into education when I went to interview to become a student at Remington, but the cost wasn't something I could handle at the time, and the recruiter said they had a position available. It ended up becoming a passion, especially during one of the hardest points in my life when I was at the Excel Center. I experienced some major health issues, and those students gave me something to live for. They really uplifted me, and ever since then, it has just been a passion. The person I've developed into has become a person who's there to serve, and I think the best way to serve people is to help make them better. Education makes us all better.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say to her, there will be some long days, there will be some sleepless nights. But just the effect that you're in, seeing one student impacted, seeing one student make it, seeing one student change how they view themselves, it'll all be worth it.
