Toni M. Johnson, MBA, MSA, is a financial management and educational operations leader with over a decade of experience supporting organizations across the education and business sectors. In her current role at Vertex Education, Toni manages financial operations for charter school organizations, partnering closely with school leaders to prepare financial statements, manage budgets, analyze fiscal performance, and ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.
Toni is recognized for developing financial systems that enhance accuracy, efficiency, and organizational clarity, while providing actionable insights that inform sound decision-making. She regularly supports leadership teams and governing boards through financial reporting, documentation, grant-related processes, and strategic planning, ensuring stakeholders have clear, data-driven visibility into organizational performance.
Prior to her current role, Toni spent several years in senior campus- and district-level operations leadership positions within charter school organizations, overseeing both financial and operational functions. This experience strengthened her ability to manage complex budgets, build scalable systems, and support organizational growth in dynamic environments.
In addition to her corporate leadership work, Toni is the Founder of Empyrean Accounting Consulting, a bookkeeping and financial advisory practice serving small business owners and entrepreneurs. Through her consulting work, she provides financial management, bookkeeping, budgeting, and forecasting services with a strong emphasis on transparency, trust, and long-term sustainability.
Toni holds a Master of Science in Accounting from Texas A&M University–Commerce and a Master of Business Administration from Prairie View A&M University. What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Toni advises young women entering finance not to be intimidated by numbers. With study, mentorship, and practice, financial skills become both accessible and empowering, opening doors to leadership and long-term opportunity.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Toni believes one of the biggest opportunities in finance today is helping organizations move from reactive financial management to proactive, strategic planning. As businesses and schools navigate funding constraints, compliance demands, and economic uncertainty, there is a growing need for clear financial systems, accurate data, and advisors who can translate numbers into meaningful decisions.
