Her Story
About Toni
I've been in the legal field for 33 years, and my journey has been one of steady growth and dedication. I started as an artist with a business background, but I always loved watching Wall Street TV and court shows, so I decided to jump into the legal field to see if I would like it. From the first time, I loved it - there's just so much going on, and I absolutely love the law. I'm that TV and movie person who loves Law & Order and the legal arguments. Over the years, I've worked in smaller firms and bigger firms, moving around quite a bit but gaining valuable experience with each move. What I'm most proud of is making it from the bottom to a management-style position where I have significant responsibilities. Early in my career, when I had my daughter 30 years ago, I found law firms that were willing to hire me part-time and let me make my own schedule - some days, some nights - so I could maintain a work-life balance back when that wasn't even a thing. They valued me enough to work with me, and I got to spend precious time with my daughter while still doing meaningful work. Now, as a legal administrative supervisor at Marshall Dennehy since 2011, I oversee 60 people in our casualty-type law department. I coordinate work when people are out on medical leave or vacation, and I still do court filings and actual legal work myself because I never wanted to lose that. I'm a troubleshooter and facilitator - when there are questions or someone doesn't know something, I get the answer. I conduct administrative evaluations, meet with attorneys, and participate in our annual leadership conferences. I'm a very good team player who relates well with everyone, from attorneys to administrative and support staff, because I've been there - I started at the bottom and worked my way up. When I'm in a good place, I stay, and I feel like I'm a very good asset to the firm in terms of value and the work they get out of me.

01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The legal industry is changing significantly, especially with everything going digital and AI - we have to keep up to date on what's going on out there through conferences and programs. One of the biggest challenges we're facing is that younger people aren't coming into the field like they used to, so we're trying to do a pyramid-type thing here to attract them. What I tell young people is that there's a lot to offer - it's a 9 to 5 job with 35 hours a week, paid time off, and no weekends, which is a big sell. There's real growth potential too - you can start as a project assistant and work your way up to an LSS, which pays more, and even move into management positions in the firms. We still need support staff because attorneys can only bill for the legal work, but the smaller things are where we come in to make sure they have what they need so they can move on to the next billable task. The industry isn't like it was in our day, but there are still solid opportunities for those willing to come in and use their critical thinking skills.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
My core values center around being a very good team player and relating well with everyone, whether it's attorneys, administrative staff, or support staff. I've always believed in starting from the bottom and working my way up, and that experience has shaped how I lead today. I'm a troubleshooter and facilitator at heart - when there are questions or someone doesn't know something, I get the answer and make sure things flow smoothly. Building strong relationships is essential to me because I have to get along with everyone to be effective in my role. I think I've built up nice relationships here in my department and with the firm overall, and I see myself as a very good asset in terms of the value and work I provide. Beyond work, I deeply value work-life balance, which became especially important to me when I had my daughter. I was fortunate to find firms that valued me enough to let me create my own schedule so I could be present for my family while still doing meaningful work. That balance is something I still prioritize today - I love hosting parties, opening our house to friends and family, organizing group outings to concerts, and staying active with sports like bowling. Every weekend I'm out doing something with friends and family, and I make time to support causes I care about, especially animal welfare and local rescue organizations.
