About Tonia
Tonia Haney serves as an instructor in Vancouver, Washington, where she teaches automotive diagnostics, electrical engine performance, hybrid and electric vehicle diagnosis and repair, and curriculum for Toyota technicians. With five decades in the automotive field, she began her career after earning a bachelor's in advanced technical studies, working first with General Motors in the Detroit area before being transferred to Oregon. After declining a return to Detroit, she operated her own mobile technician business until the economy downturn led her to teaching in 2010. Haney later moved to Virginia to launch a new automotive program before returning to Washington. She holds a master's in education focused on curriculum and development, and maintains ASE Master certifications in Automotive, Diesel, and Body Technician categories, with world-class technician status pending spring recognition. Her notable achievements include developing a hybrid electrified powertrain course for Toyota T10 schools nationwide and receiving the inaugural Powerhouse Award in 2025 along with the Faculty Excellence Professionalism Award from a Virginia college. Previously active in the now-defunct Association of Women in Automotive, she supported scholarships and community classes for women entering the trade.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You don't actually have to love cars to do it, you have to like working with your hands. Don't be afraid to do it. There's still some condescension but don't get frustrated, don't let them get to you. Just don't give up, just keep going.
