Her Story
About Tonya
Tonya Coleman is a Workforce Development Specialist with the Maryland Department of Labor, based in Cambridge, Maryland. In her current role, she supports workforce development initiatives by working with unemployment insurance benefits, federal regulations, documentation requirements, and client follow-up processes. With approximately two and a half years in state government service, Tonya has developed expertise in navigating complex regulations while providing responsive support to individuals accessing workforce programs.
Before entering state government, Tonya built a diverse career in healthcare and education. She spent approximately ten years as a nursing assistant before transitioning to the school system as a Speech and Language Pathologist Assistant, a role she held for about two years. Although she had always dreamed of becoming a teacher, Tonya ultimately recognized that education was not the path she wanted to continue pursuing and embraced an unexpected opportunity with the State of Maryland. Her career journey reflects her willingness to learn, adapt, and move forward when circumstances call for change.
Tonya attributes her growth and success to overcoming personal challenges, learning from difficult experiences, and maintaining humility throughout every stage of her career. She encourages young women to embrace mistakes, avoid being defined by imperfections or past decisions, and never be afraid to start at the bottom. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, writing music, and developing creative projects, including a science-fiction screenplay. She also maintains a strong faith and regularly supports Revelation Church’s online ministry efforts through donations.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Tonya
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my drive to overcoming obstacles from childhood through bad relationships, maintaining humility from my nursing journey, and realizing I was not on the right path before. I learned from everything I did wrong and made it through those obstacles, so I have no choice but to keep going forward.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My best advice for young women just starting out is to not be afraid of your mistakes. Don't hone in on your imperfections or all of the wrong decisions. Don't be scared to start at the bottom because it's important to learn who you are and to get your value from your experiences and not from someone else's perception of you.
