Her Story

About Tonya

With almost 30 years in healthcare, I have built my career on the foundation of discipline and structure I gained from 7 years of military service right out of high school. When I transitioned to civilian life, I was drawn to healthcare because it offered the same kind of structure with regulations and procedures that I was accustomed to. I started as a CNA and became a licensed occupational therapist, earning my bachelor's degree through vocational rehabilitation with VA support. I then pursued my MBA from the University of Phoenix online back when doing business online wasn't cool, all while working full-time and raising two children under five. Throughout my career, I have worked across home care, long-term care, post-acute care, hospital psych, and outpatient settings. Today, as an executive director of a Continuing Care Retirement Community, I run multiple business lines with a primary focus on operations, ensuring we provide a safe and comfortable environment for our residents while maintaining fiscal responsibility and building a strong culture for my team members. I am most proud of the expansion we recently completed at my current organization, where we restructured the bed count from a predominantly long-term care model to a more clinically complex post-acute rehabilitation model. This 2-3 year process involved extensive interviews and information gathering from team members, transitioning beds without discharging patients, complete remodeling, and successfully filling the beds after our grand opening. What drives me most in my work is mentoring, educating, and building team members to take my place.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success 100% to discipline. My biggest competition is myself. I don't compete against those around me, I compete against myself. That discipline I learned in the military has carried me through everything, from earning my MBA online while working full-time and raising two children under five, to building my career over nearly 30 years in healthcare. It's about constantly pushing myself to be better than I was yesterday, not comparing myself to others but always striving to exceed my own standards.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Remember why you do it. If you forget, go see your patients. Know that it's always work. I always thought that once I got higher on the career ladder, it would be less work, but it's the same amount of work, if not more work, it's just different kinds of work. It used to be physical work, and now it's actual work that requires mentality and integrity. This industry is not for the weak at heart. You're gonna see things that are gonna break your heart. You just have to remember why you do it, and don't think that it's ever going to get easier, because there is no easier plane. But at the end of the day, when you lay your head on your pillow at night, you can go to sleep knowing you're doing the right thing for the right reasons, whether anybody's looking or not.
