Ten minutes with Tonya
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to God’s grace, my resilience, and my refusal to give up even when life tried to break me. Every challenge I faced — personally, professionally, and spiritually — shaped my determination to rise and help other women rise with me. My education gave me the tools, but my lived experiences gave me the purpose. She Became the Change was born from my journey, my healing, and my commitment to walk beside women as they rebuild their lives with dignity, strength, and faith.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received was to never shrink myself to fit into places God didn’t design for me. I learned to trust my calling, honor my gifts, and keep showing up even when doors closed. Every “no” pushed me toward the purpose I was meant to walk in — and that mindset has shaped my leadership, my education, and the creation of She Became the Change
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell young women to lead with purpose, not perfection. This work requires heart, resilience, and the courage to stand in rooms where you may not always feel seen. Your education will open doors, but your authenticity will keep them open. Never apologize for your strength, your voice, or your calling. Stay rooted in faith, stay committed to growth, and remember that every woman you serve deserves the same dignity and determination you give yourself. You don’t have to have all the answers — you just have to show up with compassion and truth.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is the growing number of women who are doing everything “right” yet still struggling to meet basic needs. The gap between resources and real‑life circumstances is widening, and many women fall through the cracks because support systems are overwhelmed or outdated.
But this challenge also creates a powerful opportunity: to build programs that are more human, more accessible, and more responsive to what women actually face. There is a real need for organizations that combine education, emotional support, and practical assistance — and that’s exactly where She Became the Change is making an impact. The opportunity lies in meeting women where they are, restoring dignity, and creating pathways that help them rise with confidence and stability.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are integrity, compassion, faith, and accountability. I believe in showing up with honesty, treating people with dignity, and doing the work even when no one is watching. In both my personal life and my career, I lead with empathy — meeting women where they are, without judgment, and walking beside them as they rebuild. My faith keeps me grounded, my resilience keeps me moving, and my commitment to serving others guides every decision I make. These values shape how I live, how I lead, and how I empower women through She Became the Change.
