About Tori

Tori Renaud is a Fractional HR Consultant based in Belleville, Michigan. With 11 years in human resources and just over a year as a fractional consultant, she supports small businesses under 200 employees that may have only administrative HR or none at all. Renaud earned her bachelor's degree in Human Resources from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2017 and an associate's degree in Business Administration, having worked full-time while completing her studies. She is a member of the Greater Ann Arbor Society of Human Resource Management and a referral exchange network of solopreneurs. Renaud advocates for a holistic, bottom-up approach to HR that creates processes leading to successful employees and businesses, aiming to overcome the field's reputation as merely an enforcer of rules. She draws on career advice to maintain momentum and pivot when needed.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Tori

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One leader told me to just keep running in whatever direction you're currently going in. Eventually you'll hit a wall and you'll pivot, but that's okay. Use whatever momentum you have.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

No one is going to die. While taking your work and studies seriously is important, it is also important to recognize that not everything is an emergency and make sure you put things in perspective. Balance is critical. HR is a field prone to burnout, so you have to protect your own wellbeing.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

HR has a bad reputation as the enforcer or firing department. Opportunity to take a holistic, bottom-up approach creating processes that make successful employees and successful businesses, creating win-win opportunities.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Empathy, Respectful Communication, and a Willingness to Tackle Problems Even When Things are Ambiguous
