Her Story

About Toriann

I've been in healthcare since 2000, and have spent the last 26 years caring for patients. I currently work at Inova Fairfax Medical Center in Fairfax, Virginia as a Level 4 Surgical Technologist, the highest clinical level before becoming a surgical tech lead. I perform every surgical service offered except cardiac, including trauma at our level 1 trauma hospital, neurosurgery orthopedics, and many other complex procedures. I started my career in Labor & Delivery, but after doing so many C-sections, I was ready for a new challenge. Moving to the main operating room gave me the opportunity to expand my skills, strengthen my critical thinking, and work on a wide variety of complex cases. I love that no two days are the same I am constantly learning, every surgeon has a unique approach that keeps me engaged. In addition to caring for patients in the OR, I enjoy teaching. I train surgical technologist and help nurses learn to scrub and assist surgeons during procedures. I truly enjoy being part of a team dedicated to providing exceptional patient care.

I would attribute my success to my mom, because without her I probably wouldn't be where I am currently right now, and without God, of course, first. She made it possible for me to pursue my education and career while raising my family.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell them that yes, it is hard in the beginning, because learning something new is always hard. It's like learning to read and write those skills develop together, and with practice they become easier. The same is true in any career, what feels challenging at first becomes easier as you gain experience. Learn various skills because the more you know, the more marketable you become.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges facing surgical technologist is the ongoing workforce shortage. Many operating rooms are working with fewer experienced staff while surgical volumes continue to to increase. That can create added pressure, but it also highlights how essential surgical technologist are to patient care.
