Her Interview
Ten minutes with Towanna
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my faith and to showing up – understanding the assignment, producing, and consistently delivering with excellence. Knowing my talents makes room for me, and moving about my day without trying to force anything, because God has shown up for me in ways that I could not show up for myself. I trust in His divine protection, guidance, and timing.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received was that it’s okay to not assist everyone immediately. As a responder by nature, that was hard, but I’ve learned to gather as much information as possible, prioritize the needs and determine what and who can wait.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be confident and know that you are capable. That’s why you were selected.
Be humble and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Especially from those that you lead.
Get a good mentor. Your mentor can be from any industry or field. A good mentor or leader can lead anyone..
Know you won’t please everyone. No matter how well you perform or lead, it won’t be enough for someone.
Help someone else crossover, especially women. Never forget someone helped you.
Stay ready! An opportunity can arrive at any time.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
My field is considered a cost center or not revenue-generating, and we must show a cost or business case justification for anything that's not already budgeted as a company priority or seek support from a revenue-generating function.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Character, integrity, respect and accountability are of equal importance to me.
