Ten minutes with Treana

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to persistence, resilience, and my determination to never give up, even when faced with adversity or obstacles. I remain focused on my goals, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and continually strive to achieve greater things both personally and professionally. I believe that maintaining a positive mindset, staying committed to continuous growth, and pushing beyond my comfort zone have been essential to my success.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to never stop learning and continue challenging myself to grow professionally. Early in my career, someone encouraged me to pursue a medical degree, recognizing my potential and encouraging me to reach for the highest level of professional development. While I chose to advance my career as a nurse practitioner, that encouragement stayed with me and reinforced the importance of continually expanding my knowledge. Even though I am not currently enrolled in a degree program, I remain committed to continuing education, staying current with the latest healthcare information, and strengthening my clinical expertise so I can provide the highest quality of care to my patients.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering healthcare is to remain determined and never stop pursuing your goals, even when you encounter obstacles or setbacks along the way. Challenges are inevitable, but they do not have to define your journey or limit your potential. I have faced my own share of obstacles throughout my career, yet I remained committed to moving forward and ultimately achieved my master’s degree. Believe in yourself, stay focused on what you want to accomplish, and remember that perseverance and dedication can help you overcome challenges and turn your goals into achievements.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges I see in healthcare is navigating career advancement in environments where opportunities can sometimes feel influenced by professional connections rather than solely by qualifications and experience. In my role at the VA, I have experienced the frustration of being qualified for nurse practitioner opportunities while feeling limited in my ability to advance. The emotional demands of caring for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments, along with staffing shortages and demanding workloads, can also be challenging. At the same time, I see tremendous opportunities to advocate for patients who may not have a voice, improve the quality and accessibility of care, and continue developing professionally through education and lifelong learning. Balancing my roles in nursing, advanced practice, and leadership allows me to broaden my impact while continuing to grow and contribute meaningfully to the healthcare profession.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my professional and personal life are integrity, passion, empathy, and treating others according to the golden rule. I believe integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching, while passion motivates me to remain dedicated to the work I do and the people I serve. Empathy allows me to understand and support others with compassion, particularly when they are experiencing difficult or vulnerable moments. Above all, I believe in treating others with the same kindness, respect, and consideration that I would want for myself.
