Her Story

About Tristina

As a Toledo native and former foster youth, I learned early in life that the most effective solutions come when the people affected by policy have a seat at the table. That belief has shaped my career in public service and my commitment to advocating for stronger communities across Ohio.

My goal is to steward my life well, lead with integrity, and be a beacon of hope for young women pursuing public service. I believe that when we lead with humility, compassion, and purpose, we have the power to create meaningful change in our communities and in the lives of others.

Ten minutes with Tristina

01What do you attribute your success to?

On a holistic level, I attribute my success to God. My faith has taught me that perseverance is often forged through trials, and that challenges can become opportunities for growth and purpose.

I also attribute my success to the community that has supported and invested in me along the way. I have been fortunate to work alongside public officials and leaders who genuinely care about improving the lives of others. Their example of servant leadership, dedication, and commitment to their communities has inspired me and helped shape the leader I am today.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was from my government teacher, who is actually a state legislator now. He told me, 'A ship without a destination wanders aimlessly.' I've carried that with me since high school. It just means to have a destination, to have a goal. That advice has guided me throughout my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Know and understand your identity. Whatever that looks like, embrace you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is recognizing that in order to effectively advocate for others, you must also advocate for yourself and take care of the people closest to you. Public service often attracts individuals who are deeply committed to helping others, but sustaining that work requires balance, healthy boundaries, and a willingness to prioritize your own well-being when necessary.

Another challenge is resisting the temptation to tie your identity to your title. In public service, there is always another position to pursue, another opportunity to climb, and another milestone to achieve. The ladder is endless. Over time, I have learned that success is not defined by a title but by the impact you make and whether your work aligns with your values and purpose. It takes courage to make decisions based on what is right for you rather than what simply looks like the next step forward.

At the same time, this challenge presents an opportunity: to lead authentically, remain grounded in who you are, and build a career centered on service rather than status.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Character.
