Her Interview
Ten minutes with Tunisia
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to God and my faith, along with having a strong support system from family and friends who pushed me to keep going even when I wanted to give up.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received was from my director Kathy Schofe when deciding to pursue my counseling degree. She said as women we often talk ourselves out of success, and asked why wait? She advised that whether I do it now or later, five years will pass anyway, so I might as well go for it now.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Take your time, no rush. Don't be afraid to pursue it, connect with other counselors, find a mentor you can trust as a sounding board, and build a strong network and community through school counseling organizations like ASCA or your state association.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges include the shift in school counseling toward more extreme mental health and behavioral issues, including rising suicide and homicidal ideations not seen 10 years ago. Opportunities lie in professional growth, development through organizations like ASCA conferences.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity and honesty are most important to me. I stress these strongly to the middle school students I work with.
