Her Story

About Tyffani

Tyffani Caldwell is a Fire Sprinkler Inspector with approximately seven years of experience in the fire protection industry. She currently works for an independent fire sprinkler contractor serving the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene region, where she performs inspections, testing, maintenance, and compliance verification for fire sprinkler systems, backflow preventers, fire hydrants, and fire pumps. Her work is guided by NFPA 25 standards and a strong commitment to life safety and system reliability.

Tyffani entered the fire protection field following the closure of a previous workplace and quickly discovered a natural aptitude for the industry. Through hands-on apprenticeship training, mentorship, and continuous professional development, she built expertise in inspection services and fire pump testing. Over the course of her career, she has gained experience in both installation and inspection work, developing a strong technical foundation in water-based fire protection systems.

Currently holding NICET Level II certification, Tyffani is pursuing NICET Level III certification to expand her qualifications into additional fire protection disciplines, including fire alarm and special hazard systems. Passionate about continuous learning, technical excellence, and increasing female representation within the trades, she hopes to inspire more women to pursue rewarding careers in the fire protection industry.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Tyffani

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a strong drive to learn and continuously improve my knowledge of the fire protection industry. From the beginning of my career, I have wanted to understand every aspect of the work and develop the technical skills necessary to perform at a high level. That commitment to learning has allowed me to grow professionally and pursue new certifications and responsibilities throughout my career.

I also credit much of my development to my first supervisor, Travis, who served as an exceptional mentor. His passion for the industry, technical expertise, and dedication to teaching helped me build confidence, gain valuable knowledge, and develop the same enthusiasm for the work that continues to motivate me today.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women to stay confident, remain resilient, and never give up on pursuing their goals. The fire protection industry can be challenging, particularly because it is traditionally male-dominated, but it is important not to let criticism, doubt, or negative opinions discourage you from moving forward.

If this is the career you want, keep pushing ahead and believe in your abilities. Remember that you belong in the industry just as much as anyone else. Women bring valuable perspectives and strengths to the field, and I encourage others to embrace those qualities while continuing to learn, grow, and advance professionally.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in the fire protection industry is overcoming the perception that this work is primarily for men. Customers, contractors, and others in the field do not always expect to see women working as fire sprinkler inspectors or contractors, which can create situations where women feel the need to prove their capabilities.

At the same time, the industry offers tremendous opportunities for growth and advancement. There are numerous certification pathways and specialized areas of expertise, including backflow testing, fire hydrant testing, fire extinguisher certification, fire pump testing, and advanced NICET certifications. As I continue working toward NICET Level III certification, I see significant opportunities to expand my knowledge into fire alarm systems, foam systems, and other specialized fire protection disciplines.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I place a strong emphasis on life safety, continuous learning, resilience, and professional growth. Knowing that the work I perform helps protect lives and property gives my career a strong sense of purpose and responsibility.

I also value perseverance and the willingness to keep learning throughout my career. Whether pursuing additional certifications, developing new technical skills, or helping encourage greater diversity within the industry, I believe growth comes from staying committed, remaining adaptable, and continuously striving to improve.
