Her Interview
Ten minutes with Tyrah
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the women in my family, all of whom are nurses or in the medical field as RNs or nurse practitioners, and to my kids. I want to show them greatness by practicing what I preach, which is why I pursued and completed my master's degree summa cum laude while raising children and working.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received was from my clinical instructor Dr. Knowles in nursing school: there are many ways up a mountain, meaning you can achieve goals even if not in the expected way. Also, delay is not denial - your path may differ but you will still succeed.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Reach for the stars and never stop learning. Every day is a new lesson regardless of age. Start now because life never stops happening, and you can never finish what you have not started.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is the shortage of qualified nurses, especially in specialties like OB and pediatrics, making it hard to staff and find faculty to teach students effectively.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, compassion, and integrity are most important. As a nurse, I treat every patient as if they were my own family member - my mom, dad, child - ensuring honest information, integrity in actions, and leading with compassion.
