Her Story
About Tzila
Tzila Thomas serves as a Growth Strategist at Google in Mountain View, California. In this role, which she began this month, she partners with businesses to develop strategies that help them increase revenue, often aiming to double or triple their business. Thomas started her career 8 years ago in ad sales on a platform similar to Yelp, where she spent 3 years. She then moved to the US for nonprofit sales for a couple of years, followed by a year in cybersecurity sales at a new AI startup before joining Google. During her nonprofit work, she received recognition from colleagues for innovation after creating a new program to address an unmet need in the Silicon Valley community. Thomas has remained very involved in the community over the last 5 years. She has navigated a male-dominated industry throughout much of her career, developing skills to succeed in that environment. Her journey to Google involved persistence through rejections, building referrals via coffee chats and LinkedIn outreach, and a holistic approach that included therapy.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Tzila
01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I lose focus on what she wants, and then move backwards. So I knew I wanted to get a role at Google, so I understood how many times do I need an interview to pass one interview, because I got a ton of rejections. And then, in order to get interviews, how many referrals do I need? And in order to get referrals, how many coffee chats do I need? And in order to get coffee chats, how many people need to answer me on LinkedIn? And in order for that, how many people do I need to reach out to on LinkedIn? So, that was a huge part of what I did, and therapy, because I think that our life is a holistic approach.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I've usually been in a very male-dominated industry, and to navigate that, I think, required different skills.
