Her Story

About Uchechi

Uchechi Egwu serves as a Captain in the Army Nurse Corps, representing Brandon, Florida. With a background in health care, she began her nursing career in a nursing home upon arriving in the United States, then advanced to long-term acute care hospitals and critical care units, including cardiothoracic ICU. Egwu worked as a professional development specialist overseeing critical care and cardiac division education before transitioning to her current military role. She earned a Master's in Education in 2019 and has a passion for teaching, which led her to overcome concerns about her accent to become a nurse educator. Egwu finds great fulfillment in helping others discover their purpose in nursing and is excited to continue serving patients in the military, with upcoming training in Oklahoma.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Come with the right heart for the patient. Once you have the right heart for your patient, every other thing aligns, and you find that purpose. If you come in with the wrong intentions, if you don't have the patient at heart, it's really difficult to find your purpose in nursing. You can be anything you want to be in nursing. Just have the right heart for your patients and all other things will align.
