Her Story

About Una

Una Wirkebau brings more than 30 years of experience to her work in economic vitality through consulting. After owning several location-based businesses such as a bed and breakfast in rural Colorado, bars, restaurants, and trailer parks, she transitioned to consulting with businesses, cities, towns, counties, states, and foreign entities to strengthen regional economies. Her approach emphasizes quickly assessing situations, building trust, connecting disparate elements, and implementing strategic plans that achieve stakeholder buy-in in a fraction of the typical time. Una is a member of IEDC, NLC, and NACO, and she has been active in Rotary in the past. She received the Paul Harris Award from Rotary approximately 20 years ago and the EDDI Economic Development Developer of the Year Award in Arizona five to six years ago. She attributes her success to tenacity and maintaining a positive outlook that seeks the good in people, situations, and locations. Currently enrolled in an MBA program at the University of East London, Una values hands-on learning from the School of Hard Knocks over traditional classroom settings, having attended the University of Oregon for three years in the 1980s without completing a degree.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Una

01What do you attribute your success to?

Tenacity, always having a positive outlook on really any situation. Any situation that is placed in front of you has more than one answer, and so always trying to find the good not only in people but in situations and locations and then working out from that.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Economic developers for that title is very male-dominated so I would love to see more women in the industry. Also just women leaders. I think that really helping our youth understand why things happen the way they do... conveying that I think it's really important.
