Her Story

About Vaishali

I have been working in telecommunications for over 10 years, starting as an intern and progressing to a lead engineer managing teams and projects. I specialize in distributed antenna systems (DAS), which provides connectivity inside buildings, stadiums, and large venues where high capacity is needed for many people at once. This field has significant scope because while cell towers outside have existed for years, inside-building networks are increasingly important. I manage teams ranging from 3 to 10 people and coordinate various projects. I did my bachelor's in electronics and telecommunications, and what really captured my interest was the wireless side of telecommunications - understanding how calls, data, and messages reach our phones through complex math, physics, and networking. I came to the U.S. to pursue my Master's in Telecommunications from the University of Maryland, graduating in 2015. I was the first person in my family to come to the U.S. for higher education and the first to earn a Master of Science degree, which was a proud moment for my family. I chose telecommunications because I wanted to do something different from the traditional engineering fields like civil, mechanical, or electrical that are common in India. I did all my research independently without guidance, exploring which fields interested me most, and telecommunications stood out. Throughout my career, I have progressed from engineering roles into leadership positions, managing not just technical work but also cross-functional teams and projects.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

In the initial part of your career, it is better to be like a sponge and try to absorb all the knowledge that you can get while working. Try to help not only your team members but also cross-functional teams so that you get exposure to different varieties of work. This helps you figure out if you're really interested in something else beyond what your team is working on. Being really detailed and precise as an engineer is crucial - when you go into the details of your work and get a very strong hold of something, your importance increases in the company. When you know all the ins and outs of a particular project and can answer any question about it, you become the guru of that thing, which makes your position really strong. Communication has really helped me grow from an intern to an engineer to a lead engineer. Communicating with not only your peers but also upper management increases your presence in the company. When upper management knows you, knows your performance, and knows you have a stronghold on something, their perspective on you changes and they think highly of you. They see you as a key player in the company, which really helps in the long run for promotions. Not only communication in general, but also communicating regarding your work in a timely manner, and sometimes over-communicating - all sorts of communication really helps you succeed.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Friendship and trust are really important values for me. In a company, if you have good relations with your team, like a friendly relation, and maintain good rapport with everyone, that really helps. Sometimes when you're stuck at something, you need another person's perspective to help you so things can be done quickly, or else you're just stuck for a long time. Having that kind of environment where everyone thinks of each other as friends or family, that kind of comrade environment where there's trust - that is a really important value that should be there within oneself and within the company. Apart from that, integrity is also important. If you're honest to yourself and honest to others, that really shows you are a valuable person in the company and to yourself. There are some people who say something, do something different, and later in the long term they do face those consequences. Initially they may get away with it, but I have seen that it really affects them later on. But once you have that integrity, everyone sees that, and that really helps you in the long term. Trust and integrity are good aspects and central values.
