Her Story

About Valerie

I've been in my industry for 15 years now, with my career split between two distinct phases. The last 50% of my career has been spent in insurance, while the first 50% was in IT, software, and consulting. I started off in business development direct producer roles and moved into leadership roles as a high-growth type of executive. I fell into insurance, was born in it, and truthfully, it was really post-COVID that I decided to do what I do best in helping organizations grow and scale, mostly scale-ups in the insurance space working with insurtechs. As a fractional executive, I'm basically a Chief Growth Officer as a service, working with North American companies or global companies to bring them into North America and help them expand their growth efforts. In my current project as managing director in the portfolio intelligence space, I've been helping to build, solidify, systematize, and really formalize their go-to-market strategy and help them identify someone who can help with their business development efforts. I've successfully completed my mandate with what I would say are honors if I was in school. I'm really proud of taking a region when I was country manager in Canada and also managed the Northeast U.S. for a Reuters organization - I took that low-performing, at best mediocre minus region into the top-performing region in the world out of 43 global territories. Another accomplishment I'm extremely proud of is partnering with a Tier 1 insurance company where the revenues were in excess of $500 million for the total contract duration. It felt like I was planning, but it just happened through hard work, and it's really preparation meeting opportunity.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work and preparation meeting opportunity. When I look back at what I've accomplished, like taking a low-performing region and turning it into the top-performing region in the world out of 43 global territories, or partnering on contracts with revenues exceeding $500 million, it felt like I was just planning and working hard, but it just happened. That's really how I can describe the virtue of how those accomplishments were achieved - through consistent hard work and being prepared when opportunities presented themselves.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be true to yourself. Do not adopt a value system that you disagree with. Obviously, connect with organizations and work with organizations who you truly believe in and who you admire, and are proud to represent as far as the brand, because the brand is an extension of you, of who you are. Work hard, but also don't overwork. Pay attention to getting enough rest and recharging so you can come back as your best self. Those are just a few things I believe are important for young women starting their careers.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I'm an avid believer in work-life blending. I don't define success just by my professional career - I believe in achieving success in what I deem as success in my personal life, which is really living joyfully, giving back to my community, and being a good friend. Those are the things that give me heartwarming joy. I consider myself a high achiever not just defined by my professional career, but defined as my life as well. Working with organizations whose value systems are aligned with yours is important, because when your value systems are aligned, you make friends and build meaningful relationships.
