Just because you build something valuable doesn't mean people will understand its value. I learned to listen first, test small, gather feedback, and then build bigger.

Her Story

About Valerie

Valerie Lambert is a licensed optician in the state of Ohio and the owner of Optical Arts in Toledo, where she brings more than 17 years of experience in the optical industry to her work. As a business owner, she oversees the operational and creative aspects of the practice, including content creation and social media, while remaining deeply engaged with customers. Valerie specializes in helping clients select eyewear that complements their individual style, educating them about their optical needs, and delivering a highly personalized customer experience. Her approach combines professional expertise, creativity, and genuine relationship-building to help customers see and feel their best. Before returning her full focus to Optical Arts, Valerie developed a strong foundation in marketing and communications, progressing from coordinator to account executive and gaining valuable experience in client relations, project management, public relations, and strategic communication. She earned a B.A. in Communication from The University of Toledo and has continued to expand her expertise through professional education and industry leadership. Valerie is an ABO-NCLE Certified Speaker, a published optical industry writer, and a developer of continuing education courses covering topics such as contact lens troubleshooting, eyewear, customer service, and effective education techniques. She also mentors apprentices in her practice, helping the next generation of opticians build their knowledge and confidence. A passionate advocate for independent opticianry, Valerie is involved with professional organizations including the Optical Women's Association and the Opticians Association of Ohio, where she serves as Secretary/Treasurer and supports education, advocacy, governance, and industry engagement. Her leadership and commitment to community have contributed to Optical Arts' longstanding recognition, including Best of Toledo honors, while her professional accomplishments have also earned her recognition as a 20 Under 40 nominee. Valerie credits much of her success to the mentorship and training she received from Mary Nyitray and Dr. Carol German, the unwavering support of her mother, and the dedication of her all-women team. As the optical industry faces challenges from equity-backed acquisitions and competition from large retailers such as Costco, she remains focused on demonstrating the value of independent optical care through education, expertise, and personalized service.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Valerie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the incredible women who have mentored, trained, and supported me throughout my journey, particularly Mary Nyitray and Dr. Carol German. My mother has also been a tremendous source of encouragement and unwavering support. I am equally grateful for the amazing team behind me, especially my all-women staff, whose dedication, expertise, and commitment continue to inspire me and contribute to our collective success.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received came from my mentors, Mary Nyitray and Dr. Carol German, who played an important role in shaping my development within the optical profession. They taught me the value of continuous education, professional growth, and sharing knowledge with others. Their guidance has inspired me to pay that mentorship forward by teaching, supporting, and mentoring others as they build their own careers.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to recognize that you do not have to prove your value to anyone. Trust your abilities, step confidently into opportunities, and let your work speak for itself. Keep telling your story, share your experiences, and never be afraid to use your voice. Be authentic, take action, and remember that your value is already within you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in the optical industry is the growing presence of equity-backed companies acquiring independent optical practices, along with increased competition from large retailers such as Costco. At the same time, this creates an opportunity to differentiate through education, personalized service, and meaningful customer relationships. By helping customers understand the value of our expertise, individualized care, and commitment to their needs, we can build lasting trust and demonstrate what sets us apart.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are authenticity, education, community, mentorship, exceptional customer service, professional advocacy, and supporting other women. I believe success is built through genuine relationships, continuous learning, and a commitment to serving others with integrity. I also believe businesses should focus on consistently sharing their story and demonstrating their value rather than feeling the need to prove themselves to everyone. Outside of work, my family is my greatest priority, and I especially enjoy spending time with my 7-year-old adopted son, visiting amusement parks, and relaxing with true crime shows. I also value connecting with other professionals, building meaningful relationships, and creating opportunities to learn and grow together.
