About Valerie
Valerie WEHIONG serves in higher education administration with the University of North Carolina System, where she has worked for 10 years and 8 months after earlier roles at NC State. Her career spans international positions as a technology transfer specialist from 1992 to 1997 and a mobility consultant from 1998 to 2013, with a consistent focus on global collaboration. She holds three master's degrees in international development, decision and conflict management, and global studies from Southern Methodist University and North Carolina State University. Valerie maintains certifications in project management, procurement, negotiation, dispute resolution, mediation, facilitation, leadership, and lean management. As a professional mediator and conflict management educator, she teaches conflict prevention and resolution while mentoring international students on adaptation and readjustment. She is a member of mediation organizations and Black Educator in North Carolina. In addition to her professional roles, Valerie has supported a middle school for eight years through prizes, book drives, building a school library, and providing sanitary pads for girls. She currently faces challenges with National Science Foundation funding for international research collaborations due to shifting government policies.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be bold. Follow your dreams, work hard. You matter. You are enough. If you don't get a seat at the table, take a seat. Don't hide your light because you can be the light of someone else.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Funding challenges with National Science Foundation due to new government policies affecting international research collaborations and student exchanges.
