Her Story
About Vanessa
I am deeply passionate about helping others and firmly believe that education is a right. I have seen firsthand how many individuals—particularly women in technology—struggle to complete their degrees due to caregiving responsibilities, financial challenges, or competing life demands that make it difficult to stay focused.
When I came across the opportunity to contribute to this work, I knew it was something I had to pursue. I quickly developed a strong connection to the mission and take pride in being a small but meaningful part of the effort to empower our students. In my role, I strive to ensure that students feel supported, valued, and recognized as individuals—not just numbers—but as members of the Miami Dade College community. Their success is a reflection of all of us, and I am committed to doing everything I can to help them overcome obstacles along the way.
My work also extends to supporting students’ families, particularly in navigating access to essential services such as Medicaid and food assistance. Many of the students I serve face complex circumstances, including caring for family members with chronic health conditions. One of the most challenging aspects of my role is responding to urgent situations, especially for students transitioning out of foster care, who often face immediate instability upon turning 18.
I believe it is critical to create an environment that goes beyond academics—one where students feel safe, supported, and empowered to succeed. After building a strong professional foundation, I made a deliberate decision to pursue work driven by purpose. As technology continues to evolve, it is essential that we not only keep students engaged in their education but also ensure they are equipped to adapt and thrive in a changing workforce.
Ultimately, my goal is to uplift and empower the community, and I remain fully committed to that mission.

Ten minutes with Vanessa
01What do you attribute your success to?
I have been fortunate to learn from incredible mentors who generously shared their knowledge and guidance. Additionally, my parents instilled in me a strong work ethic and a deep commitment to community service. Being surrounded by such positive influences, along with colleagues who share the same passion and genuine care for others, has shaped my approach and purpose in my work.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to never take “no” as a final answer—there is always a way forward. Too often, people accept rejection without exploring alternative paths or considering a plan B. I’ve learned that the journey to achieving a goal is rarely linear; it may require going in different directions, adjusting strategies, and seeking out new resources. This mindset has pushed me to stay resilient and adaptable. It has also shaped how I approach my work, recognizing that every situation is unique and requires an open mind and creative problem-solving.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women is simple: just go for it. You are more than capable, even if you don’t always feel like it in the moment. I would first congratulate you for even considering investing in your future—that alone takes courage.
Don’t let overthinking hold you back. That’s often where fear begins to creep in and convince you to step away from opportunities that are meant for you. Instead, take that step forward anyway. You don’t need to have everything figured out—you just need to start.
Remind yourself that you are worthy, you are deserving, and you have what it takes. Growth comes from action, not perfection. So trust yourself, move forward with confidence, and don’t let doubt decide your path.
Afterall, every expert was once a beginner.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide me most are integrity, honesty, and respect. I strive to approach everything I do with my head held high, whether I’m transitioning from a role or navigating challenges. Even in difficult situations or when something cannot be completed as planned, I believe in maintaining my integrity and being transparent. To me, it’s essential to consistently uphold respect—for myself and for others—in every interaction.
