About Vanessa

Vanessa Santiago has been working in senior services since 2015. She currently serves as program director for two years at a senior center, overseeing overall operations to ensure full certification, staff credentials, and delivery of education, recreation, arts and crafts, physical health management, mental health groups, nutrition classes, and hybrid courses. Her path began as a program specialist coordinating activities for older adults, which evolved into case management involving benefits such as food stamps and housing assistance. She advanced to supervising case management before moving into directing roles. She holds an associate degree in liberal arts from Bronx Community College earned in 2013 and a bachelor's degree in sociology from Lehman College earned in 2021. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to myself, my family, the community I serve, and especially my mom who set the standard of excellence. My little one looking up at me was a motivating factor with no room to trip up.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

There is no progress without struggle. This quote resonates deeply as a guiding principle.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You have to be passionate about what you do. If your passion is to help others, then this is the field for you. For leadership, you have to want to coach others, work as a team, and lead by example.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is getting older adults engaged with changing technology like AI and hybrid courses, building their confidence and trust. The opportunity is growth if you have the passion for it.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Community and engagement are most important. It's important to stay grounded and connected because we need people in life.
