Vanisha Miglani
I am in clinical data management. When there are clinical trials in the market, when pharmaceuticals or biotech companies want to bring new drugs to the market, there are clinical trials that go on in the back. For those clinical trials, I create their databases. Once the databases are live, I review the data with my team members. My job is to make sure that the clinical data that the patient provides is of high quality, it is clean for regulatory submissions, such as FDA, EMEA, or for any other regulatory agencies, for them to review that data and provide their approval. There are different kinds of approvals - INDs, NDAs, FDA approvals, and so on. That is my job, to ensure that the data that we are getting is of high quality, it is clean, it is up to par in order to submit it for different purposes that we have defined. I work on global trials that run across the world in Europe and APAC regions. I work with pharmacovigilance, clinical development, clinical scientists, and everyone. I come from a medical background - my parents are doctors. Originally, I'm from India. After I completed my high school, I was giving competitive exams to get into medical school. Destiny took a turn and I decided to join a program in biotechnology, where I would complete two years in India, and then the rest of my studies would be completed here in the U.S. I came here in 2009 to complete my studies. In 2011, I completed my bachelor's. I worked for a little bit, and then I joined MBA. I completed MBA, and ever since, I am just in this industry, helping clinical trials.

What do you attribute your success to?
I would dedicate this to my father. He's not with me anymore - he passed away two and a half years ago. But he was the one who always motivated me, always. He always let me fly, I'll be very honest. He was the one who gave me the wings to come here alone at the age of 19. My mom and dad - I can proudly say that they are the ones who gave me the wings, who are the ones who made me who I am today.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Listen to your heart. If this is something that interests you, go for it.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
AI is taking over a lot of stuff in clinical trials. I always think about this - AI can analyze data and do so many things, but not everything. A computer isn't going to meet with your team and discuss the findings that you are seeing, the insights that you are seeing. Computer can only say yes and no. If things are working in the right direction, okay, go ahead. If not, no. But sometimes there are other things that you need to think about. In clinical trials, we do look at the data, we review the data, and then based on our reviews, based on the team's findings, we decide whether we want to move forward, whether we want to do these clinical trials for a longer term, or whether we can proceed to the other phases of clinical trials. Sometimes we don't see the data that we are looking for. But does that mean that we should stop? There may be things that we can modify in order to keep those clinical trials going, because there are things that only humans can think about, and machines can't do that. Computers, or any other AI tools, anyone can't do it. I don't know how AI is going to take over in upcoming years.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I am very passionate about my job. I do feel very, very empowered about what I do. I know I'm not working with the patients directly. I don't see them on an everyday basis, but I do see their data every day. I do feel the emotions, I do feel the problems that they're going through, because I myself have seen this. I've lost my father to cancer, I've lost my mother-in-law to cancer, so it's very personal. I do want to do the good work I'm doing. Even though I'm behind the scenes, I'm behind the curtains, but I am very proud that I'm able to contribute to the clinical trials to bring the cancer drugs in the market in any way I can. When it comes to charity, I don't like to highlight what I have done for others. That's something that I'm not very good at. Me and my husband are both very religious people, so we both go help, clean, and do community services.
