Her Story
About Vanita
I grew up not very privileged and was inspired to become an attorney after watching my father struggle to access justice as a single dad. After high school, I worked in nonprofits for 10 years representing abused men, women, and children, and during law school I worked at a homeless legal clinic doing wills for Native tribes in Arizona. I graduated with my JD in 2015, earned a master's in taxation from SMU, and now practice family law at a private firm handling litigation, depositions, mediations, and appellate work including the Texas Supreme Court.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Find a mentor and learn the local rules of the court. Sit in on hearings for judges you don't know to understand how they review evidence. Get to know the court coordinator and be respectful to staff. Don't be afraid to approach other attorneys for advice after observing them in court.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
AI is a big challenge because pro se litigants use it to file numerous frivolous motions that require responses, increasing costs for clients. While technology is beneficial, attorneys must remain responsible and not rely on it for inconsistent case law research.
