Her Story

About Vanity

Vanity Martin serves as a business development professional at Ultimate Medical Academy in Huntsville, Alabama. She began her career in direct sales with Xfinity in 2017 at age 19, moved briefly to car sales at Woody Anderson Ford, and then joined Google Fiber in January 2024 where she excelled as a top sales representative and participated in the Women in Sales panel mentoring others. In her current position since January 2026 she makes daily calls to healthcare employers, matches graduates with suitable job opportunities, provides interview coaching, and facilitates the hiring process. Martin is pursuing an associate's degree in health and human services with plans for a bachelor's in psychology, drawing motivation from her experiences as a teen mother raised in low-income housing. She credits her family for her perseverance, values honesty and showing grace to others, and advises young women entering sales to be themselves rather than fitting into molds. Martin remains active in her church and her children's PTA while embracing change and viewing 50 no's as leading to one yes in her field.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Vanity

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my family. Like I said, I was a teen mother. I had my oldest daughter at [AGE]. And she is the reason that I kept going. I always wanted to show her that no matter what happens in life, you know, crazy things are gonna happen, curveballs are gonna happen, you do have to keep going. You never just settle for what you have in front of you. If you want better for yourself, you keep going.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice that I've ever received is be a champion of change. We, working with Xfinity, working with Google Fiber, especially in, direct sales, there's always gonna be change, there's always gonna be new rules, there's always gonna be new things that you have to abide by and go with. Even with the hierarchy of your management. And one time when my supervisor was being transitioned to a different team, it kind of, you know, really hit everybody a little bit more hard than what I think it should. And the piece of advice that he left with all of us was to be a champion of change, no matter what's happening, what's going on, always show up, always put your best foot forward, and make sure that you're the person that's accepting the change and not being the pushback for it.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would give to be self. I know with my job, especially with direct sales, it was a male-predominant field. Even when I came in on my first day, a lot of people were looking at me, I was young when I got that job, and I was told, like, hey, when I started this job, you had to have a bachelor's degree, you know? In which I could kind of see myself, young Vanity then, trying to make sure that I sit into a mold that I thought would be acceptable. But if I was actually started out with just being myself, and showing exactly who I am, and not just trying to fit into this mold of what I think people wanted me to be, or what people needed me to be in that moment, I would be a lot further along.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges, like I said, is going to be that it is a male-predominant field. So, you do have to, you know, you have to stay on your toes, you have to make sure that you're putting in the work and grinding just as hard, if not harder. But the opportunities are endless. The opportunities in sales and business development are endless. Once you actually get your foot into the door, and you realize that this is something that you can do, because it is discouraging, all of the different no's that you hear every day, I tell myself every day. 50 no's equals to 1 yes. You'll hear 50 no's before you actually hear one yes in any situation.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family, honesty, And It's on the tip of my tongue, like, I know what I want it to be, but the word is not coming out. But grace, showing everybody grace. Yeah, because you never know what somebody's going through.
