Her Story

About Venissa

Venissa R. Saddler, MBA, MPA, is a highly accomplished finance and accounting professional with 20 years of progressive experience in the accounting field, including 12 years specializing in the manufacturing sector. She is a CPA Candidate with distinguished “Big Four” experience at Deloitte, where she supported a wide range of industries across the United States while traveling approximately 70% of the time. This extensive exposure strengthened her expertise in financial controls, auditing, and operational finance, and played a foundational role in shaping her career in financial controllership. She is recognized for her ability to apply strong technical accounting knowledge to complex, fast-paced business environments while maintaining a high standard of accuracy, compliance, and analytical rigor. In her current role as Financial Controller, Venissa leads comprehensive finance and accounting operations, including cost accounting, financial reporting, forecasting, month-end close, inventory valuation, and capital expenditure management. She partners closely with plant operations and senior leadership to ensure financial accuracy, strengthen internal controls, and support strategic decision-making. Her leadership is instrumental in driving operational efficiency and maintaining the integrity of financial processes within a complex manufacturing environment. Venissa earned four traditional, classroom-based degrees: a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance (2000), an MBA (2002), a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (2006), and a Master of Professional Accountancy (2008). She is currently completing the final phase of her CPA certification. A significant highlight of her career is her tenure at Deloitte, which she considers a defining professional milestone that provided rigorous training and long-term career acceleration. Beyond her professional accomplishments, she is deeply committed to community engagement through her active membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, where she supports initiatives focused on voter registration, youth development, and assistance for domestic violence survivors.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Venissa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being the youngest in my family and the first to graduate from college. Coming from the rural Mississippi Delta, I was inspired by what I saw growing up and wanted to beat the odds. My hometown and life in the Mississippi Delta served as motivation to want to get out and overcome the challenges. I am committed to life-long learning and continuous growth-both personally and professionally.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received came from my professor at Delta State, and I carry this with me all the time. He told me to never toot your own horn - let others do it for you. A lot of recruiters who contact me are impressed by my profile on LinkedIn or Indeed, and I think that advice has really served me well throughout my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell young women entering accounting to study hard, of course. But more importantly, I want them to know that the sky is the limit. Coming out of where I came from, I learned that the sky truly is the limit- reach for it. Don't let doubt or circumstances hold you back from achieving your goals in this field.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

As accountants, we are really in a good position right now, but there are significant challenges we face. The revolution of AI is changing our field. However, the biggest challenge I see is the lack of minorities in accounting. We are very underrepresented in the profession. Because of this underrepresentation, when I go to conferences with 70 other controllers representing areas across the country where my employer has plants, I'm often the only Black person in the room. The good news is that there are different scholarships now available for minorities going into accounting specifically because we need more representation in this field.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are integrity, trust, and dedication. These principles guide everything I do, from my professional responsibilities in financial controls and auditing to my community service work with my sorority.
